iPad vs Amazon Fire for Kids: Which Is Better?

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 7, 2026

It’s the most common kids-tablet question: the premium Apple iPad or the budget-friendly Amazon Fire? Both are good - they’re just built for different priorities.

Bottom line: Fire for value and younger kids; iPad for the best apps, performance and longevity. Both are safe, well-controlled choices.

The quick verdict

Amazon Fire Kids is the better value and the easier all-in-one for younger children. iPad is the better long-term choice for the best apps, performance and lifespan - at roughly double the price once you add a case.

Price and what’s included

A Fire HD Kids tablet includes a rugged case, a year of Amazon Kids+ content and a two-year no-questions replacement guarantee for around $150–$190. An iPad starts around $349 and includes none of those - you buy the case (and any content) separately. For pure value, Fire wins clearly.

Parental controls

Both are excellent. Amazon’s Parent Dashboard is arguably the most parent-friendly out of the box, with easy time limits, per-child profiles and content approval. Apple’s Screen Time is just as powerful and more granular, but lives across the whole device rather than in a dedicated kids app.

Apps, performance and lifespan

This is where iPad pulls ahead: the App Store has the largest, highest-quality library of children’s and education apps, the performance is in another league, and Apple supports iPads with updates for many years. Fire OS uses the smaller Amazon Appstore (no Google Play by default) and is noticeably slower.

Durability

Fire Kids tablets ship inside a chunky drop-case designed for toddlers. An iPad is a premium glass device that must be paired with a rugged kid case - budget for one.

So which should you buy?

  • Choose Fire if you want the best value, an all-in-one kid bundle, and a younger child.
  • Choose iPad if you want the best apps and performance, a device that lasts for years, and you don’t mind paying more.
