Do Kids Tablets Need Wi-Fi or a SIM Card?
Short version: nearly every kids tablet is Wi-Fi only and does not need a SIM card or a mobile plan. Here’s what that means in practice.

Wi-Fi only - no SIM, no monthly plan
All the mainstream kids tablets - Amazon Fire, iPad (Wi-Fi model), Samsung Galaxy Tab A, and budget Android tablets - connect over home Wi-Fi. There is no SIM slot to worry about and no separate data bill. You set it up once on your home network and you’re done.
How they work offline (great for travel)
This is the good news for car journeys and flights: you can download videos, games, books and learning content over Wi-Fi at home, then use them offline with no connection at all. Amazon Kids+, Netflix, Disney+, YouTube Kids and most learning apps all support offline downloads.
Before a trip, plug the tablet in, open each app your child uses, and download the shows and games you want - then the tablet keeps them entertained with zero signal.
What about mobile data on the go?
You rarely need it. If you truly want internet everywhere (not just downloaded content), the simplest option is to turn on your phone’s hotspot and connect the tablet to it - no second plan required. Cellular-model iPads exist but are more expensive and unnecessary for most kids.
Setup tip
On the child’s profile, you can restrict or disable the web browser entirely, so even on Wi-Fi they only reach approved apps and sites. Turn that on before you hand the tablet over.
