How Much Storage Does a Kids Tablet Need?

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 7, 2026

Storage is the spec most parents under-buy. Here’s how much a kids tablet really needs, what eats it up, and the cheap way to add more.

Bottom line: Aim for 32GB, and prefer a tablet with a microSD slot so you can add cheap storage later. Only iPads can’t be expanded.

The short answer: 32GB is the sweet spot

16GB fills up fast and will frustrate you within weeks. 32GB is a comfortable minimum for most children. 64GB or more is worth it for older kids who download lots of games or full seasons of shows - or just buy a tablet that takes a memory card.

What actually fills the storage

  • Downloaded video is by far the biggest culprit - a few movies or a season of a show can be several gigabytes.
  • Games, especially 3D ones, can be 1–2GB each.
  • The operating system and apps already use several gigabytes before you add anything.

That’s why a “16GB” tablet often has only ~10GB usable - enough for a handful of downloads, then it’s full.

The money-saving trick: microSD

Most Amazon Fire and Android tablets have a microSD card slot. A cheap memory card can add 128GB or more for the price of a couple of coffees - far cheaper than paying for a bigger built-in size. iPads do not take memory cards, so choose the built-in size carefully if you buy Apple.

Quick recommendation

  • Younger child, light use: 32GB is plenty.
  • Downloads lots of video/games: 32GB + a microSD card, or 64GB.
  • Buying an iPad: 64GB minimum, since you can’t expand it.
