How to Choose a Kids Scooter by Age and Height
A scooter that fits is safer and far more fun. The key is matching the handlebar height to your child - plus the right wheels and deck for their age. Here’s how.

Get the handlebar height right
The most important fit factor: with the child standing on the deck, the handlebar should reach between their waist and chest (around belly-button to mid-chest height). Too high and it’s hard to steer; too low and they hunch. An adjustable-height bar is ideal - it grows with the child and covers a range of ages.
Rough size guide
| Age | Height | Scooter |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 85–105 cm | 3-wheel, low deck, short adjustable bar |
| 4–6 | 105–120 cm | 3-wheel or first 2-wheel, adjustable bar |
| 6–9 | 120–135 cm | 2-wheel, folding, taller adjustable bar |
| 9–12 | 135 cm+ | Bigger 2-wheel or beginner electric |
Wheels and deck matter too
- Bigger wheels roll more smoothly over bumps; smaller are nippier - most kids scooters sit in between.
- A wider, low deck is more stable for little feet.
- Weight limit - check the child is within it, especially for older/heavier kids.
When between sizes
Because a good scooter is height-adjustable, you rarely have to size up too far - set the bar to fit now and raise it as they grow. Avoid buying a bar that’s already at its shortest and still too tall; that means the scooter’s too big.
Match wheels to the rider, number to the age
Combine this with the 3-wheel vs 2-wheel decision: little kids on stable 3-wheelers, older kids on adjustable 2-wheelers. Get the bar height and wheel count right and the scooter fits - and gets ridden.
