What Age Can a Kid Start Riding a Scooter?

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 10, 2026

A scooter builds balance, coordination and confidence - and kids can start young. Here’s an age-by-age guide to the right scooter for each stage.

Bottom line: kids can start on a 3-wheel scooter from about age 2–3, move to 2 wheels around 5–6, and to electric from ~8+ (check the age rating). Readiness - standing, pushing, steering, balancing - matters more than the exact age, and a helmet is a must from day one.

The short answer

Most children can start on a 3-wheel scooter from around age 2–3, move to a 2-wheel scooter around 5–6 as balance improves, and are ready for electric scooters from about 8+ (often with a manufacturer minimum age). Match the scooter to the stage and it grows with them.

Age-by-age guide

Age Best scooter
2–3 3-wheel toddler scooter - low deck, lean-to-steer, very stable
3–5 3-wheel with adjustable bar; some move to 2-wheel late in this range
5–8 2-wheel kick scooter - folding, height-adjustable
8–12 Bigger 2-wheel or a beginner electric scooter (check the minimum age)
12+ Stunt scooters or higher-spec electric (mind local e-scooter laws)

Readiness beats the number

Some 2-year-olds take to a 3-wheeler instantly; others aren’t ready till 3. Look for the ability to stand, push and stop, and enough coordination to steer. For the move to 2 wheels, the child needs decent balance - see choosing by age and height.

A word on electric scooters

Electric scooters carry a manufacturer minimum age (often 8+) and higher speeds - they’re a different level of risk. Check the age rating, speed, and your local laws on where kids can ride them. See kick vs electric.

Always with a helmet

Whatever the age, a correctly-fitted helmet is essential from the very first ride - see our scooter safety guide.
