Scooter vs Balance Bike: Which Should You Get First?
For a toddler’s first ride-on, parents often weigh a scooter against a balance bike. Both are brilliant - they just teach slightly different things. Here’s how to choose (or do both).

We compared 10 kids scooters on stability, build quality, ride, safety and value - 3-wheel, 2-wheel and electric, for every age and budget.
What each one teaches
- A balance bike teaches balance - the hardest part of cycling - so kids often skip training wheels later.
- A 3-wheel scooter teaches coordination, pushing and steering with lots of stability, and is very easy to start on.
They’re complementary, not rivals.
Ease of starting
A 3-wheel scooter is usually the easier first ride - it stands up on its own, so a nervous toddler can push and glide without fear of tipping. A balance bike takes a little more confidence but builds true balance faster. Many toddlers start with a scooter and add a balance bike as they gain confidence.
Which leads where
- Balance bike → a smooth path to a pedal bike (see our kids bikes guide).
- Scooter → a 2-wheel scooter, and general coordination that helps everything.
Age and preference
Both suit toddlers from about 2. Some kids gravitate to one over the other - a scooter can feel less intimidating, while confident, active toddlers love a balance bike. If in doubt, a 3-wheel scooter is the gentlest, lowest-risk start.
Why not both?
They’re inexpensive and teach different skills, so many families own both - a scooter for easy fun and coordination, a balance bike to nail balance before a pedal bike. If you buy one first, a 3-wheel scooter is the easiest entry; a balance bike is the better bridge to cycling.
