The quick verdict
Gabb is the simplest to lock down (no browser, app store or social by design). Pinwheel gives caregivers a curated app library and scheduled modes. Bark is a real smartphone with the deepest monitoring and alerts. Simplest → Gabb; most flexible → Pinwheel; most oversight → Bark.
Gabb: blocking by default
Gabb phones look normal but have no internet browser, app store or social media at all. You get safe calling and texting and a small set of safe apps. It’s the easiest to trust for a younger tween because there’s almost nothing to police.
Pinwheel: caregiver-curated
Pinwheel also blocks the app store, browser and social media, but lets parents build the phone from a library of 900+ vetted apps via the Caregiver Portal, with scheduled modes for school, bedtime and play. More flexible if you want to choose exactly which apps appear.
Bark: monitor a real phone
The Bark Phone is a full Samsung smartphone with Bark’s content monitoring and alerts built in at the system level. Instead of blocking everything, you allow a real phone and get alerted to concerning texts, images or searches. Best for older kids you’re coaching toward independence.
Cost
All three require a monthly plan - typically $15–$49/month - which is the real cost over time. Gabb and Pinwheel start lower; Bark’s bundled plan is higher but includes the deepest monitoring. Factor the plan, not just the device, into your budget.
