Do Kids Smartwatches Need a SIM or Data Plan?
The monthly plan is the most overlooked cost of a kids smartwatch. Whether you need one - and how much it costs - depends entirely on the type of watch.

Three types, three answers
- Bluetooth/companion watches (pair to a parent’s phone): no SIM, no monthly fee. They only work near your phone.
- WiFi-only smartwatches: work on home/known WiFi, no plan, but no calls or location once your child leaves WiFi.
- LTE/cellular smartwatches (their own SIM/eSIM): need a monthly plan so the watch can call and share location anywhere. This is what most parents actually want.
What the plan costs
An LTE kids-watch plan is typically $5–15/month, either from the watch brand or added to your carrier as a smartwatch line. Over two years that’s $120–360 - often more than the watch itself - so budget the plan, not just the device. Some brands (e.g. carrier-based watches) bundle it into your existing plan; others sell their own.
Do you actually need cellular?
Ask what you want the watch to do:
- Want your child to call you and be locatable anywhere? You need LTE + a plan.
- Only using it at home or paired to your phone? A no-plan Bluetooth/WiFi watch is enough.
For most families buying a kids smartwatch for school runs and outings, LTE with a plan is the point.
Keeping the ongoing cost down
- Check if your carrier offers a cheap smartwatch add-on line.
- Compare the brand’s own plan vs a carrier plan.
- Look for annual pricing, which is often cheaper than monthly.
- If fees put you off, a no-plan watch still handles calls when near your phone.
