Do Breathing Monitors Prevent SIDS?

The honest answer: no
What these monitors actually do
They track signals like chest movement, or heart-rate and oxygen trends, and notify you when readings fall outside preset ranges. For some parents that’s reassuring. But a notification is not a diagnosis, and the absence of one is not a guarantee that everything is fine.
What actually reduces SIDS risk
Pediatric health authorities point to safe-sleep practices, not gadgets:
- Always place baby on their back to sleep.
- Use a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet - no loose bedding, pillows or bumpers.
- Keep baby’s sleep area in your room (room-sharing) for the early months, but on a separate surface.
- Avoid smoke exposure and overheating; consider a pacifier at sleep time.
Should you buy one at all?
That’s a personal choice. A breathing or vitals monitor can ease anxiety for some parents, and that has value - as long as you treat it as a comfort tool layered on top of safe sleep, never a safety guarantee. If you have any concern about your baby’s breathing or health, contact a healthcare professional.
