Best Waterproof Camera for Kids: What to Look For

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 10, 2026

Pools, beaches, rain and mud - kids and water go together. A waterproof (or water-resistant) camera survives it all. Here’s what to look for so it actually lasts.

Bottom line: check the real spec - water-resistant (splashes) vs waterproof to X metres (submersion) - and match the depth to pool/beach/snorkel use. Look for shockproof build, a float strap and sealed ports, and always close the cover and rinse after use to keep the seals working.

Waterproof vs water-resistant

These aren’t the same. Water-resistant handles splashes and rain; waterproof can be submerged to a stated depth. Check the IP rating or the meters figure: e.g. ‘waterproof to 1 m/3 m/10 m’. For pool and beach use, look for genuine submersion depth, not just ‘splash-proof’.

How deep do you need?

  • Splashes, rain, sandy hands: water-resistant is enough.
  • Pool and shallow play: waterproof to ~1–3 m.
  • Snorkelling / diving into the pool: 5–10 m rated action-style cameras.

Features that matter for water & rough use

  • Shockproof/drop-proof too - water and drops go together.
  • A wrist strap or float so it doesn’t sink or slip away.
  • Big, easy buttons that work with wet fingers.
  • Sealed ports (a good, latching cover over the charging/card slot).

Care that keeps it waterproof

Waterproofing only lasts if the seals are cared for. Always fully close the port cover before it goes near water, rinse with fresh water after the sea or a chlorinated pool, and check the seal for sand or grit. A door left ajar is the #1 cause of a ‘waterproof’ camera flooding.

Waterproof camera or action cam?

For older, more adventurous kids, a rugged action camera (GoPro-style or a kids version) doubles as a waterproof camera and shoots video of bike rides and pool dives. For younger kids, a simple waterproof point-and-shoot is easier to use. Match ruggedness to how (and how deep) they’ll really use it.
