Instant Print Cameras for Kids, Explained

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 10, 2026

Instant cameras turn a photo into something a child can hold seconds later - pure magic for kids. But there are two very different types, and the running cost varies a lot.

Bottom line: instant cameras are magic for kids, but the paper/film cost matters as much as the camera - thermal (ZINK) is cheap to run, instant film is pricier but prettier. Check the price per print, buy paper in bulk, and pick a model that also saves digital copies.

Two kinds of ‘instant’

  • Instant film (Instax-style): a real chemical print develops in your hand. Beautiful, but film costs add up (roughly $0.70–1 per shot).
  • Thermal / ZINK (‘zero-ink’): prints onto special heat-sensitive paper - cheaper per print and less messy, with slightly lower quality. Common on kids print cameras that also save digital copies.

The running cost is the real story

The camera is only half the cost - the paper/film is the rest. A cheap instant camera with expensive film can cost more over a year than a pricier one with cheap thermal paper. Always check the price per print before buying, and factor it into the true cost.

Which suits your child?

  • Younger kids / heavy shooters: thermal (ZINK) print cameras - cheap paper means they can snap freely, and many also keep a digital copy.
  • Older kids / the ‘real photo’ magic: instant film for that classic developing print - just budget for film.

Print vs digital-only

A digital-only kids camera has no consumables - the cheapest to run. An instant-print camera trades that for the tactile joy of a physical photo. Some kids print models do both: print a copy and save to a card. Decide whether the printing magic is worth the ongoing paper cost.

Tips to keep costs sane

  • Buy paper/film in multipacks - much cheaper per print.
  • Choose cameras that also save digital copies, so not every shot needs printing.
  • Teach kids to print the keepers, not every frame.
