Do Baby Monitors Need a Subscription?
The subscription is the most overlooked cost of a baby monitor. Whether you need one depends entirely on the type of monitor.

Non-WiFi monitors: never a subscription
Monitors with a dedicated parent screen (Infant Optics, Eufy, Babysense, VTech, Motorola) have no monthly fee, ever. You buy the device and that’s it. This is a big part of why they’re such good value over time.
Smart WiFi monitors: often, but not always
Many smart WiFi monitors keep their best features behind a plan: Nanit Insights (sleep analytics), Cubo Ai Care Premium (AI alerts, video history), and some Owlet and Lollipop extras. A few smart monitors - notably Miku - include their core features free with no subscription.
The true-cost math
A $5–10/month plan is $120–240 over two years - often as much as the camera itself. That doesn’t make subscription monitors bad (you’re paying for genuinely useful insights), but it should shape your budget. If you want smart features with no ongoing fee, look at Miku or a non-WiFi monitor.
How to keep costs down
- Decide whether you’ll actually use the paid insights before committing.
- Check whether an annual plan is cheaper than monthly.
- If fees put you off, choose a no-subscription monitor from the start.
