How to Choose a Crib Mattress

Reviewed by: Top 10 For Kids Editorial Team · Updated: September 11, 2026

The mattress is the most safety-critical part of the whole crib. Here’s how to choose one that’s safe, fits properly and lasts.

Bottom line: choose a firm, flat crib mattress that fits snugly with no gaps - that matters more than foam vs innerspring. Add a waterproof cover, skip soft padding, and replace any mattress that sags or no longer fits.

Firmness and fit come first

A crib mattress must be firm and flat, and fit snugly. It should not indent much when pressed, and there should be no gap wider than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame. A soft or ill-fitting mattress is a suffocation risk.

Foam vs innerspring

  • Foam: lighter and cheaper; choose a dense, firm foam (weight is a rough guide to density).
  • Innerspring: often firmer and more durable; more coils and a firmer gauge generally mean better support.

Both can be excellent - firmness and fit matter far more than the type.

Breathability, dual-sided and covers

A waterproof, wipe-clean cover keeps it hygienic. Some mattresses are dual-sided - a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side - which extends their life. Breathable designs can help, but they don’t replace the basics of firm and flat.

What to skip and when to replace

Skip soft ‘plush’ infant mattresses, toppers and any add-on padding. Replace a mattress that’s sagging, has gaps, or is being reused from years ago if it no longer feels firm or fits snugly. Match the mattress size to your crib (standard vs mini) - see our crib guide.
