What Age Can Kids Use Headphones?
There’s no single ‘right’ age for headphones - it depends on volume safety, fit and supervision. Here’s a practical age-by-age guide.

From toddler to tween
| Age | Guidance |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | Skip headphones; use device speakers at low volume. Ears are developing and fit is poor. |
| 2–3 | Only if needed (travel), with volume-limited over-ear headphones sized for toddlers, and supervised. |
| 3–6 | Good age for volume-limited over-ear kids headphones - planes, tablets, learning apps. |
| 6–10 | Comfortable with volume-limited headphones; introduce the 60/60 habit. |
| 10+ | Can use standard headphones responsibly with volume limits on the device. |
Why the early caution
Very young children can’t tell you if something’s too loud or uncomfortable, and their ears are more sensitive. That’s why for the youngest, headphones should be volume-limited, over-ear, well-fitting and supervised - or skipped in favour of low-volume speakers.
Fit matters as much as age
A headphone that’s too big slips and gets turned up; too tight and it’s uncomfortable and gets abandoned. Look for kid-sized, adjustable over-ear headphones with soft cushioning. Good fit keeps volume down and comfort up - see getting kids to wear them.
Safety rules at every age
- Use volume-limited headphones (around 85 dB) for children.
- Apply the 60/60 rule: ≤60% volume, ≤60 minutes, then a break.
- Prefer over-ear to earbuds for younger kids.
- Supervise the youngest and check they’re comfortable.
